SPARRING With
JOYCE CAROL OATES

Watching and or listening to a Joyce Carol Oates Interview, is a bit like watching a professional boxer sparring between title fights. We writers understand very well, that the actual battles, are the writing of our Books, Essays, Articles and Short Stories, the promotion and warm-ups or cool down-work-outs, are often, with lesser than opponents, and sometimes, with other professionals, at our level. I cannot say, nor will I delve into, why, or how, or what it is, that excites me, about certain boxers or certain writers, the fact is: I simply like them. Joyce is indeed placed in this category. Ms. Oates is prolific, her work, on the page, is compassionate, alive, much of it is humanist, not at all like an experiment by a scientist or a nurse, or a doctor or an authority figure, within an institute or prison. Quite recently, I noticed a promotional tweet, from our Bureau of Arts and Culture social media site, which received an exemplary amount of views and an impressive number of repeat impressions. We were, and still are, promoting, our Newest Short Story Series: "ELMERS WILL and Other Folk Tales." Apparently, unbeknownst to me, at the time, Joyce Carol Oates, whom is an avid tweeter, as well as a Grand Dame of Literary American Giants, had re-tweeted our link, and, in doing so, revealed our series to her readership and fans of her work. Where normally, a few hundred or thousand might read or listen to a short story, by yours truly, thousands and eventually, tens of thousands will listen in, and, of course, we are honored. The average reader may not entirely understand how things work, in todays publishing world. There are Insiders, those represented by a publishing house, there are Graduates, those being placed in the industry by a university, there are Professionals, those invited to review works in the New York Times, and then there are Champions, those who have remained in the writing game, or, to continue the metaphor, stayed in the ring, retained their title, and become, well respected at an international level, Joyce Carol Oates, in this case, is a heavy weight Champion. It is very rare for a writer, such as myself, who is self taught, owns his own Magazine and is also an independent fine artist, without affiliation, to any publishing house, newspaper, religious or scientific entity or university, to receive any such endorsements, reviews or even a blurb from the afore mentioned categories due to the new Game.

In olden day, writers wrote one another letters, they freely endorsed each others work, sometimes, because they had the same Literary Agent, other times because they had the same Publishing House, and most of the time, because they simply liked the other writers work. Jack Kerouac, the famed leader of the late 1950s beatnik literary movement and author of the ground breaking Novel, "On The ROAD," had been bombarded by requests from his publishers at Viking Press and others to review and or submit blurbs for up and coming writers of a wide variety, more often than not, he denied the requests. Though, one of the exceptions, was a novel, written by newcomer, Ken Kesey, who had written a book, appropriately entitled, "One Flew Over The CUCKOO's NEST," where-in, a Nurse, backed by the scientific medical professionals, abuses her power, by using a series of experiments and supposed, 'therapy sessions,' to actually taunt and hurt the volunteer patients within her tutelage. When she meets an independent minded patient, named McMurphy, all hell breaks loose, and eventually, so to, does a silent Indian, whom is our humble narrator of this groundbreaking literary work, which exposes some of the evils that lurked within the so-called science and medicine world, where professionals can abuse their powers, without any ramifications, due to position, tenure and government contracts. So then, I personally would like to publicly thank Ms. Oates for her attention and to openly admit that I do, indeed, regularly listen to her readings and lectures as well as appearances on public channels of expression, including youtube and the like, and have included links to some of my favorite lectures at the tail of this article for our BUREAU of Arts and Culture readers to enjoy. I personally, and especially, enjoy watching Ms. Oates spar with her male counterparts, at universities and panels associated with some such literary organization, to which, she sometimes has to, 'teach,' a thing or two, about being a writer. Often times, those hosting Ms. Oates, have some such bone to pick, either they are lesser writers, lesser talents or simply, not within her league, other times, and the most enjoyable conversations are when Ms. Oates is simply discussing the Art of Writing with another Writer, of proper caliber, such as her conversations with fellow heavyweight Mr. Ford. Unworthy opponents or, 'Sparring Partners,' in various public conversations and panel discussions with Ms. Joyce Carol Oates include: Dean Nelson, Michael Krasney, Keith Raffel and most recently Jeffrey Brown of PBS, all of whom were schooled, beaten or took more than a few heavy hits by our reigning champion and the subject of this article: Joyce Carol Oates, whom has several new books and a variety of works, both in Fiction and in Non Fiction. Jeffrey Brown, whom is a reporter at PBS, and is also a published writer, at Copper Canyon Press, completely throws the fight, in the first round, pandering, leading and excitingly asking Ms. Oates to read a simple passage, that explains absolutely nothing about the book being promoted.

Mr Brown's amateurish zeal is tantamount to a pederast asking a child to climb a tree, whilst he looks upward. If I were Ms. Oates' father or brother or lover, I would indeed take Mr. Brown to the matte myself, and, metaphorically speaking, quite possibly, I just did. In any case, the main event, is the writing, my writing, Ms. Oates' writing, and, the official, and, in this case, the very real, Un-official acknowledgments that happen between writers, no matter their acceptance, affiliation or gender. We all know very well, who is a Pro, who is a Hack, who is a Reigning Champion and who has lost more than a little memory to simply stay in the RING. In the afore mentioned Interview between Jeffrey Brown and Joyce Carol Oates, which our readers may view by pressing the link below, Ms. Oates exclaims, this statement, "I think most people don't understand the degree to which scientist are extraordinarily imaginative in creating experiments … If you work on an experiment, you might take a year to create a really good experiment, in Molecular Biology, some of the experiments could take two years, just to set up the experiment … The average humanist doesn't understand the degree to which scientists are artist's and are very imaginative." Yes, that may be true, as for any average humanist's, whomever and wherever, they are, for none live in my house, I can only whole heartedly agree with the amount of time an experiment may or may not take. For us writers, our experiments or literary works can take weeks, months, years, even decades to complete. They are indeed much like experiments, imaginative, artistic and, we would hope, helpful and even entertaining to humankind. It should be noted that not all scientists or experiments are a result or even, intended to do such a thing. Anyone steeped in historical knowledge, can think of fiction and non-fiction examples of experimentation that did not intend anything but selfish and or misdirected knowledge, by those in power, such as the highly documented and very real nazi experimentations on humankind, and in the world of fiction, "The Island of Dr. Moreau," to name a few. Does all of this conjecture give you a head-ache ? If so, with the loss of millions of Jewish peoples, you can simply take an Aspirin by Bayer and all will be well again. For those Millions of people, some related to my relatives and heritage, involuntarily improved that product immensely, during those so-called experiments. Not unlike the lead character in "One Flew Over The CUCKOO's NEST," who has not, 'volunteered,' to take abuse from any authority figures, they, unfortunately, did not survive, and yet, the indian narrator, whom, I personally, always related to, does indeed escape to a better future, he has learned from the past and is not at all afraid to think about the future. Luckily, we, alive today, those of us whom are still free of any such experiments, can think freely, write freely, express freely, love and respect freely, at least those of us who do not have to answer to anyone except ourselves and our conscience. As for the sparring sessions with Ms. Joyce Carol Oates, having never done so, I know no more to say, and though, with every novel I have ever read by her, I can say, that she is a Champion. Apparently Ms. Oates still watches the Golden Gloves and Diamond Belt regulars, and, if that be so, thank you again, for your acknowledgement. My Name is Joshua Triliegi: I Am a Free Writer.
